Kya was a blue and gold macaw who spent the first 35 years of her life locked in a tiny metal box. She was wild caught, then kept as a breeder bird.
She was never touched, never let outside, never offered fresh food or clean water. Her life was hard, isolated, and quiet in all the wrong ways. But when a rescue finally stepped in, everything changed.
Kya was pulled from that cage and found her forever home — filled with sun, space, toys, good food, and love. She learned how to play. How to trust. How to live with people who cared.
She never got all the years she deserved, but she got the ending she needed.
This project is named after her.
Parrots are incredible—smart, social, sensitive. They’re also the most rehomed pet in the world. New owners often don’t have the information or support they need. And rescues can’t keep up with the need.
There’s no shortage of opinions online — but there is a shortage of safe, kind, trustworthy spaces to learn, ask questions, and connect with others who care.
That’s why we created The Kya Project.
We’re a community for parrot people who want to do right by their birds and each other. A place to learn from experts, talk through tough questions, and feel less alone in a world that doesn’t always get what it means to love a bird.
